Measure the usable rectangle
Take dimensions between the surfaces that will define the finished room. Record whether measurements are existing or proposed finished dimensions. For an irregular space, divide the plan into rectangles and keep a separate sketch showing their relationship. Do not use the calculation to decide a required room size, occupant load or permit condition.
Use area with a plan
Two rooms with the same floor area can work very differently. Door swings, columns, ceiling changes and equipment routes influence where furniture fits. Use the number as one line in a project brief, then check circulation and actual furniture dimensions on the drawing.
What the output means
Enter dimensions in feet and optional inches. The tool multiplies length by width and shows square feet and square meters.
Your next steps
- Measure length and width on the same basis.
- Mark columns and fixed equipment separately.
- Label rough measurements as approximate.
